Another Season of Grey’s Anatomy?
Recently ABC just renewed the TV series Grey’s Anatomy for their 15th season, that marks the longest running TV series in history for ABC. Although they are renewing they will be losing two main characters, one being Doctor April Kepner played by Sarah Drew and Doctor Arizona Robbins played by Jessica Capshaw. This announcement came as a shock to many viewers, overall, they were well liked. Both roles of Doctor Robbins and Doctor Kepner were impactful to television history. Doctor Robbins and Doctor Kepner were very influential characters because of their roles being part of the LGBTQ and Christian religion communities. Both roles are played by females, they are an inspiration to all female viewers. It displays that women can have significant roles no matter what identity they share. They will be a huge loss to the series.
Sarah Drew played April Kepner who was a very devout Christian. She played this huge influential role on screen that has previously not been played as often on TV. She was very open about her faith and how that played into the plot line of all the episodes. Tabloids are saying that this will be a huge loss to the community of Christian representation in roles on TV. She was brave in playing Doctor Kepner and opening this new opportunity for future roles in other series to be played. Throughout the series, it would show her going to the hospital’s chapel and praying along with praying with her patients at their bedside. The Christian community is very underrepresented on all television series. The writer Shonda Rimes did an excellent job incorporating Doctor Kepner into the plotline to attract more viewers. This allowed more viewers to have someone they could relate to and bring in more viewers overall.
Jessica Capshaw has been on the show for ten seasons and she played the role of Arizona Robbins an open Lesbian. She opened the LGBTQ community on television, a big mark in television history. By the author Shonda Rimes writing this character role into the plot line it was a huge impact. This showed how the community of the LGBTQ can be accepted in the workplace. Doctor Robbins did an excellent job promoting this role in every way possible for the series and the viewers watching. The plotline included her marrying a female co-worker Doctor Torrez and sharing a daughter with her. She really did a great job bringing this role to life and making her character such a likable character on the show.
It is said that each character boosted Instagram followers by 1.9 million followers. It will be a huge loss to write these two characters off. Season 15 will not be the same without Doctor Kepner and Doctor Robbins. Although the author Shonda Rimes does an excellent job writing roles that are of all social identities it will be very sad to see them exit. Their roles both being played by females was a very bold move for the writer to have in her series.

ReplyDeleteI agree this will be a huge loss to Grey's Anatomy! Not only has Shonda Rimes incorporated these two controversial issues through these characters, but has included so many more throughout her entire series. A great example Shonda doing so is when she had Meredith adopt a baby of color to defy the standard norm of single colored families. This show has such a huge impact on many issues and I am sure Shonda Rimes will find some way to incorporate a positive message through other characters in the upcoming season.
ReplyDeleteI've never watched Grey's Anatomy, but a lot of people told me they stopped watching the show because the original cast was the best and they just don't enjoy the show anymore.
