You might think YouTube is just a
website where people post music videos or sports highlights. Little did you
know there is another world out there: Vlogging. Vlogging is becoming more and more popular as
society gets lazier and lazier. Many people, like myself, love to come home and
sit on the couch for hours watching YouTubers talk about their lives. There are
so many different types of people out there creating content on a daily basis, so it is not hard to lose track of time.
One channel caught my eye as
something different than the rest: Domo and Crissy. Domo and Crissy are two
African-American lesbian women who are currently in a romantic relationship. On YouTube, they have
multiple channels together and apart, which cumulatively generate almost 7 million
subscribers. They have a big following on Instagram and Twitter as well not
only by people from the lesbian community, but by individuals of all
sexualities and ethnicities.
Since YouTube allows Domo and Crissy to be financially stable, they wanted to start a family together. They are not able to naturally become pregnant, so they went through a sperm donor in order to conceive their son. In their relationship Domo dresses as a more masculine figure, while Crissy dresses as a typical woman. This already has encouraged conversation among followers of the two, but adding a pregnancy on top of it people are really talking.
Your mind would naturally lead you to think that Crissy would be the one carrying the baby for 9 months, as she is the more feminine figure. In this case, Domo carried their baby, Domonic Cristopher, and gave birth to him 9 months later. This drew a lot of attention to their family and Domo received an enormous amount of hate and backlash on twitter and social media. To some people it is one thing to be masculine in a lesbian relationship, but it is another thing to be masculine and pregnant in a lesbian relationship. Domo is still a woman and still is fully capable of carrying a child, but it was hard for people to see that since she created a masculine image for herself.

As a couple, they are working hard
to undermine current stereotypes and promote same-sex relationships as being
something of the norm. They publicly documented their experience knowing that
there were people out there that don’t agree with them. They knew that people
would comment on their family and their pregnancy, but they didn’t back down.
They share their story and their lives each and every day through their videos
on YouTube and posts on Instagram and Twitter to promote freedom of sexuality.
Regardless of your sexuality, race, or gender you are still a human. I think that is really what Domo wants to get
across to her audience. In her instagram post above she states, "Who cares that I'm not the "normal" look of a pregnant woman. I am Domonic's mom and I am proud!" Just because she doesn't dress like a female doesn't mean she shouldn't be able to carry a child. Society is always stuck on living how it was convenient
and comfortable in the past and when new change comes in people start to freak
out. Society may be starting to get used
to lesbian relationships, but they aren’t yet warmed up to the idea of the masculine
women becoming pregnant. Domo and Crissy are working to undermine society's views on same-sex relationships each and every
day.

It is frustrating to me that society is still so caught up in gender stereotypes and an overall oblivion to same sex relationships. If a straight woman dressed more masculine and was pregnant, no one would think anything of it, but if a lesbian woman does the same thing, the internet blows up. There is no "boy & girl" in a lesbian relationship, a lesbian relationship is between two women by definition, and women can be pregnant. I really liked that you chose this to talk about because it is an important issue, but one that is rarely talked about. Overall, good job!

This is soon to be our new "norm" and will be getting more attention in the near future I think. Great job, the sub-topics you touched on to describe their lifestyle were explained very well and in depth.

ReplyDeleteI love this topic. I hate that society thinks it is their right to say anything about who people date or how they decide to start a family. It shouldn't affect anyone besides the people directly involved. I hope this couple continues to fight the norm as well with other couples to show that we can live in a society of diversity and still be united. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI really like this topic because society will rip you apart for doing anything that goes against the social norm. It's cool to see someone doing something to please themselves and for their own happiness and welcoming the backlash rather than pleasing society.
