MeToo Movement: Keep it Going!

Sexual abuse is any type of non-consensual sexual contact. In the past decade, there have been countless acts of sexual harassment. The MeToo Movement is a feminist movement aimed to bring shame and punish men for their nonconsensual sexual wrongdoings. People didn't know how big a deal this issue was until the allegations of Harvey Weinstein blew up the internet and news. He still denies all of the allegations but I believe and a lot of people believe that he sexually abused women that wanted to be in his movies he was producing. After Weinstein blew up the internet, millions of other victims of sexual abuse came forward and told their story of how they were sexually abused. After the millions of victims came forward the website metoomvmt.org/also blew up and millions of women shared thier story to this website:

Now that people have realized how big an issue this really is, it has made an influence on society. Now society knows how big an issue it is, so it will be put to a stop.
In 2017, the TIME magazine released a new issue of TIME magazine. The issue was called, The Silence Breakers and it is a magazine that is entirely based on telling men and women’s stories of being sexually assaulted and it encouraged people to speak out about sexual harassment and assault. The TIME magazine produces an issue that's called the person of the year. This issueis an annual issue that features and profiles a person, a group, an idea, or an object that has done the most to influence the
events of the year in the TIMEs magazines opinion. In 2018 the person of the year was the "Silence Breakers". These women were the women that spoke up and started the movement by going to the press and saying they were sexually abused. This is truly a brave thing to do in my opinion. However, in the magazine there were countless stories about what happened to victims of sexual assult. One of the stories is about a director by the name of Blaise Godbe Lipman, that told his story about his being sexually assaulted by Tyler Grasham, a former agent when he was 18 years old. Lipman told his story and said that Grasham fed him alcohol at a meeting and got him drunk even though he was 17 and 18 and after the meeting, Lipman claims Grasham sexually abused him at Lipman’s own home. Late Grasham had his friends drunkenly call him and scold him to keep him quiet about what happened and threatened his future in the

company. Lipman is a gay man and he experienced people digging into his Instagram and pulling up sexy photos of him as if that discredited him from speaking out against sexual violence. He says, “And gay men are often highly sexualized in the media, coming out with a story of sexual assault especially one that also involved alcohol and maybe drugs, there is an idea that ‘Well, did you want it?’.(Lipman)” This story really freaked me out becasue I didn't know that sexual assult was this bad, and it can get a lot worse.

One last thing I want to touch on is a twitter post this by Cardi B and also a tweet by the woman that started the metoo movement Taranda Banks. Here is a link to Cardi’s tweet:
and this is Taranda’s tweet:
Cardi B’s comments were how certain women might not receive the support they need if they speak out and tell their story. That is the basic jst of what her comments were about the MeToo Movement according to the website Pitchfork.
The metoo movement has gotten word around America and hopefully you can rethink everything about the metoo movement.

  1. Insightful stuff here. The MeToo movement I believe is a step in the right direction in today's society. That being said and playing the devil's advocate here, because the power and significance of the movement, how would someone defend themselves against potential false allegations without tarnishing their reputation completely? It seems like once one is outed, they remain outed.

  2. It is great that the #MeToo Movement provides a way for victims to stand up for themselves. The claim that it the #MeToo Movement is just a movement to call out on famous people and bring them down by making false accusations is ridiculous. This movement was intended to be like the Salem Witch Trials, it was created to spread awareness about sexual harassment and rape. Now, whether or not the victims want to list their attackers is up to them. I applaud the victims who decided to step forward and tell their stories because it is such as difficult thing to do, especially when you are willing to yourself vulnerable to society.

  3. The #MeToo movement is incredibly inspiring and long overdue. Women have had to put up with sexual harassment and abuse for too long. Any attempts to take the credibility away from this movement or statements that it could be used as a weapon are nothing more than shallow attempts to prevent society from changing.
