Thirteen reasons why was an instant hit series on Netflix. It came out in March 2017 and became everything that everyone was talking about. The first season was based on Jay Asher’s book thirteen reason why that came out in 2007. The whole book and series is surrounded by a teenage girl named Hannah who recently committed suicide. She leaves behind thirteen cassette tapes for the people responsible to find and watch, all explaining why she did it.
After the first season went on Netflix there was a lot of talk about the show. Many people talked about how much they loved it but, there were a good amount of people that thought the producers did not do a good job with the suicide as a whole. Many people thought the suicide itself was too graphic. They also thought they romanticized some of the very adult themes. Apparently after the series there had many many dubbed imitations of the series. Therefore, Netflix started to add more viewer warnings before each episode and letting the viewers know they can get help if they or anyone they know are going through something. Many teens said this show was very relatable and they connected to it.
Although it was a controversial show, many people enjoyed it and wanted more. Therefore, they have announced that season two will be coming soon. The first season left many people with questions and wanting answers. However, many people were against the second season since there was only one book and that is how it was meant to be. Also because of all of the backlash since it such a controversial show. But those people were overruled and we have a second season coming. In response to the people that thought it was too controversial and too much for our society, Netflix announced that the second season will incorporate tools based on the findings of a study by Northwestern University’s Center on Media and Human Development. They also are showing many resources that people can go to and have their own website, 13reasonswhy.info which people can get advice from mental health experts.
The first season was all about the cassette tapes but in the second season it is apparently all about polaroids. They will reveal the dark truth in every character and we will see what is really going on and hopefully all of our questions will be answered. Since many people were so curious about what this season would be about since there was only one book Netflix shared what goes on in this second season. “Liberty High prepares to go on trial, but someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth surrounding Hannah’s death concealed. A series of ominous Polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up,” according to Netflix. One of the writers also shared some of the themes that will be shown throughout season two. “Recovery is a central theme for us,” he said. “SO many of these kids had been through traumatic experiences, both due to Hannah’s death and also independent of that and just as a part of their lives, and we wanted to begin to see them start back on the road toward wellness and wholeness and see what that looks like in the sense that recovery is not a straight line, and it’s not a simple process. that’s a central theme of the season.”

I think this show brought controversy in a good way, making people talk about the issue of suicide and opened many people's eyes. I do agree that it was a bit graphic but also the intentions were good and showed how it affects the people around the person that commits suicide.
